Genmaicha is a unique Japanese green tea blend made by combining green tea leaves (often Sencha or Bancha) with roasted brown rice. Sometimes referred to as “popcorn tea,” some of the rice grains pop during roasting, resembling popcorn. This tea has a distinctive nutty, toasty aroma with a mild, slightly sweet, and grassy flavor from the green tea base, balanced by the warm, roasted notes of the rice. Traditionally, Genmaicha was known as the “people’s tea” in Japan because the addition of rice made it more affordable, but today it is enjoyed for its comforting and well-rounded taste. It has a moderate caffeine level and is often appreciated for its smooth, soothing qualities.
